The activities of the Petroleum Refining Division of EPRI cover all the refining processes. These refining processes can be carried out by physical, chemical refining and catalysis departments.
1- Physical Refining Department:
The activities are:
- Solvent refining processes (Deasphalting, liquid-liquid extraction, dewaxing and deoiling).
- Evaluation of solvents for the above mentioned processes.
- Production of BTX and dearomatization of light and middle distillates.
- Production and evaluation of different types of lubricating and industrial oils.
- Production and evaluation of different types of petroleum waxes (paraffin waxes, microcrystalline waxes and petrolatum).
- Regeneration of used lubricating oils.
- Using the solvent debinding process for extraction of petroleum waxes (major binders)
from the green molded parts through the stages of Powder Injection Molding (PIM) of metals
and ceramics.
2- Chemical Refining Department
The activities of the department cover the following topics:
Evaluations of commercial and synthesized catalysts used in all the petroleum refining processes, such as:
- Hydrotreating of petroleum products (HDS, HDN & HDM).
- Hydrocracking of light and heavy petroleum products.
- Hydroisomerization.
- Reforming.
- Catalytic cracking.
All these processes are carried out under industrial and refining operating conditions using high-pressure fixed–bed continuous micro-reactor unit (cata-test unit), and/or high pressure-high temperature batch autoclave.
Environmental technology research works on recycling of liquid and solid wastes in petroleum, such as:
- Recycling of waste-lube oils by hydrotreating.
- Rejuvenation of spent hydrotreating catalysts.
- Recovered the active metals from spent catalysts.
- Catalytic conversions of petrochemical solid wastes,i.e. polyethylene(PE), polypropylenes(PP), high density
polyethylene (HDPE) and low density polyethylene(LDPE) into liquid fuels.
Research services for the EGYPTIAN REFINERIES for different targets, such as:
- Optimizing and scaling-up new refining operating conditions.
- Hydrofinishing of medical petroleum products (waxes, white oils, etc.).
Proposal of scientific works cooperation with EPRI departments.
3- Catalysis Department
The activities of the department cover the following topics:
- Synthesis Of catalysts for use in petroleum refining processes such as:
- Hydroisomerization, hydrocracking, hydrodesulfurization (HDS) and hydrogenation with special emphasis on zeolites, pillared clay based catalysts besides the other conventional catalysts.
- Synthesis of mesoporous material (M41S) and improvement by supported with different metals or metal oxides.
- Synthesis of new layered nanohybrids materials and its application as photocatalysts and gas sensor.
- Environmental catalysts for: catalytic oxidation of SOx, CO and catalytic reduction of NOx.
- Study the physicochemical properties of catalysts.
- Testing the catalytic activity of the catalysts using model compounds and some of petroleum fractions.
- Mathematical modeling and optimization of catalytic reactions.
4-Instrumentatins:
- Rotary evaporator (EYELA N-2000)
- Ball mill (Erweka TB24)
- Extruder
- Crushing Strength (Erweka AR 400)
- Thermal analysis (DTA, TGA) Nëtzech
- Physisorption (manual constructed atmospheric sorptometer)
- Chemisorptions analysis (TPR, TPD, H2 chemisorption) chem. BET-3000 instrument
Catalytic properties by:
* Manual pulse microcatalytic system with computerized data acquisition
* Flow system (atmospheric and under pressure)
* Continuous high pressure system (catatest unit)
