Scientific Activites
The researchers carried out in this department include the syntheses of essential and final petrochemicals including macromolecular compounds and surfactants. Evaluation of several physico – chemical properties for these substances and their different applications, and also analytical services in the field of petrochemicals.
The petrochemicals department consists of three laboratories:-
1-Macromolecular Compounds Laboratory Fields of Research :-
- Synthesis of polymers
- Preparation of fire-retarding, electrical and insulation modifiers.
- Preparation of additives for plastics and rubber
- Preparation of adhesives, coating and Diel’s-Alder compounds.
- Preparation of building materials.
- Preparation and studies on degradable Plastics and hydrogcl for agriculture purposes.
Research analysis and services
- Chemical measurement, Physical , mechanical insulation, and specifications for plastics and rubber.
- Measurements of tensile strength, modulus of elongation,hardness, elasticity, abrasion, adhesion
and compression tests.
- Determination of the ological properties for plastics component.
2- Surfactant laboratory fields of research
- Preparation of surfactants and studing their physical- chemical properties and their applications
in different purposes.
- Preparation of plasticizer to be added to cement and studying their rheological properties
- Carrying out researches for treatment of environmental pollution.
Research analysis and services
- Determination of surface tension, interfacial tension, contact angle, sedimentation, penetration,
density, critical micells concentration measurements.
- Conductivity.
- Determination of emulsion stability using jar test.
- Determination of turbidity for water.
- Determination of rheological properties for cement pastes, viscosity and compressive strength.
- Gel permeation chromatography GPC for determining the complete molecular weight
distribution (NWD) of polymers
3- Petrochemical technology laboratory fields of research
- Studies of conversion reaction of natural gas and petroleum products produced from the distillation
of crude oil for the production of the primary materials necessary for petrochemical industries
- Effect of catalysts on hydrocarbon reactions and polymers.

- Gas-Liquid partition chromatography and FTIR for the different petrochemical products.

- Determining the effectiveness and efficiency of surfactants by CMC measurements
- Wetting behavior of tablets, pharmaceutical active agents and auxiliaries as well as pigments
- Wetting of lacquers and paints
- Degradation product content in oils (transformers)
- Tank release and cleaning process validation in the food industry
- Wetting and adhesion of coatings
- Developing of cosmetic products
- Wetting properties of inks
- Wetting of fiber bundles, textiles or single fibers up to a minimum diameter of 20 um
- Sedimentation and ductility of plaster/concrete
- Checking surface modifications
